Telavi - tacky town in Georgia?

Telavi is a city in the province of Kakheti in the country of Georgia. I was told by the tourist information center to visit the king's castle there; but it was closed for maintance. The 'old town' is really RENEWed by placterying a coat of fresh paint or cement on the front of each house. Worst of all, some houses were totally fake like those in the Universal Studio. I do not understand why people here did that. They did the same things to 'renovated' some churches, such as repaibting the roofs with a bright color (which took away the historical feel). Sigh, me.
  • Alaverdi Cathedral Built in the 11th century this is the second highest cathedral in Georgia.
  • Church of St. George
  • Tsinandali Gardens The residential palace of the Chavchavadzes family.
