Sighnaghi - winery town in Georgia

Sighnaghi's economy is dominated by production of wine and traditional carpets. Although for Sighnaghi itself half day of sightseeing will be more than enough, but this town is probably the most relaxing slow town I visited.
The guesthouse owner's father picked me up at the bus drop off, and the owner offered me welcome homemade red wine drinks. Although the owner barely speaks English, she kindly offered me bread, cheese, a green bean dish for brunch after my 2.5 hrs hard work of sightseeing to cover the following sites. It is a nice, clean and comfortable place, with Wifi, and ripe grapes on the vines all you can eat.
  • XVIII century Sighnaghi town wall, (Take the cobbled road down to Tsnori, enter through the tower at the arch.). Sighnaghi's fortifying wall is one of the biggest in Georgia, its area occupies 40 hectares. Town wall has 23 towers, each one named for a nearby town, and 6 gates, its width is 1.5 m, height 4.5 m and total length is 4.5 km. A small section of the wall has been restored for tourism. I entered this portion through the tower at the gate on the road to Sakobo/Tsnori where there is also a restaurant.
  • XVII century St. Giorgi church.
  • St.Stephen church in Sighnaghi fortress. The church tower commands a great view of Sighnaghi's surrounding areas. There was an old man here who tries to extract a fee from visitors, but there is no price for admission to the church or the tower. Fortunately there was a Russian couple when I visited.
  • Bodbe Convent, (Located 2 km outside of Sighnaghi it is one of the most important places of pilgrimages. St.Nino, IV c. apostle of Georgia is buried here. Monastery itself was constructed in the end of V century by Vakhtang Gorgasali. Bodbe monastery was reconstructed in XIX century. Half way there only me and a strange local manon the way, so I signaled apassenger car to get a ride to the monastery. The driver was touring his friend and they were kind enough to drop me back to town after visiting the monastery.
  • St.Nino spring, (done peoplewash in holy and allegedly healing water here).
  • Khornabuji fortress, (Locatedgj near Dedoplitskaro this is an ancient fortification on the rocks, first mentioned in V century. It was invaded by Mongols in XIII century).
Me and two other backpackers from Turkey shopped and cooked our dinner tighter and paired the food with free homemade red wine in sun set.
